Climate project: More than €100,000 for the Aktion Zukunft+ Initiative

Die Spende von ONLINE Systemlogistik geht 2025 an ein Klimaprojekt der Aktion Zukunft+

Our Green Cargo product, which includes a 50-cent climate surcharge per shipment, has been available since 2023. In 2024, we also introduced a voluntary climate payment of 10 cents for every shipment transported. This resulted in an impressive sum of 100,760 euros raised in 2024.

By serving as CO2 reservoirs, peatlands make an important contribution to climate protection. Therefore, we have once again decided to support a moor restoration project. In keeping with this year’s transport logistic trade fair in Munich, Bavaria, our 2025 donation will go to Aktion Zukunft+, an initiative of the District of Munich. The local project of Aktion Zukunft+ that we are supporting is the renaturation of moorland in the Brucker Moos wetlands in the Ebersberg district. The first phase of the project will start in 2026 and run for eight years. During this period, the restored areas will store 1,600 tonnes of CO2. In comparison, this is roughly the amount of CO2 emitted by a truck carrying 11 tonnes of freight over 1.15 million kilometres on German roads.

Renaturation of a peatland area in the Brucker Moos moor

Peat accumulates large amounts of carbon over thousands of years while growing in bogs. However, when wetlands are destroyed or drained, the carbon stored in the peat is gradually released and causes climate-damaging emissions. Between 20 and 50 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions can be avoided per hectare per year by protecting and restoring peat bogs.

The potential is enormous. There are approximately 220,000 hectares of moorland in Bavaria alone, according to surveys by the Bavarian State Office for Environmental Protection. Around 50 per cent of this land is used for agriculture. Around 6.7 million tonnes of CO equivalents are emitted by the drained areas each year.

There are around 3,500 hectares of drained moorland in the districts of Ebersberg and Munich. That is why Aktion Zukunft+ and its project implementation partner CO-regio have set themselves the goal of implementing measures to rewet local moors. Accordingly, moor-friendly management methods are to be established on the land in collaboration with farmers. In the current project, the initiative has contracted 10 hectares in the Brucker Moos area (District of Ebersberg) for an initial period of eight years.

Preparatory measures will be carried out within one to two years prior to the actual rewetting. These include securing the area, field work, measurements, preparing a hydrological report, and obtaining the necessary permits. The funds for this will be provided by the District of Munich.
