The general cargo cooperation Online Systemlogistik (OSL) has introduced a new product: Online Green Cargo. For every Green Cargo shipment transported, 50 cents goes to a climate project to reduce CO₂. In addition, the maximum delivery time of 72 hours is designed to ensure that utilisation and stop density are particularly high and thus environmentally friendly.

Just six months after the start of the pilot phase at the beginning of 2023, green cargo shipments already accounted for around 12 percent of the total shipment volume, and 83 of the current 96 OSL partners have already booked the product. “Environmental protection and the reduction of CO₂ emissions are very important to us. At the same time, we want to give our partners and their customers the choice of whether and when to book the climate-friendly product,” explains OSL Director Petra Welling. “With the Green Cargo option, they can determine for which shipments delivery within 72 hours is adequate. Thanks to this large time window, shipments can be bundled even more efficiently for higher capacity utilisation and lower CO₂ emissions.”

Reduce emissions, save costs

The longer delivery time benefits the environment and the economy in equal measure. This is because, in order to meet deadlines for urgent shipments, more vehicles need to be on the road. In fact, however, many shipments are not time-sensitive. This new option enables flexible and particularly economical scheduling, which according to Petra Welling definitely has a future: “How many shipments really need to be with the consignee the next day? For companies and consumers, ‘same day’ or ‘next day’ deliveries are the set standard. A change in thinking here would already be a big step toward sustainable logistics.”

OSL is going even further: 50 cents from every Green Cargo shipment is donated to a climate protection project. In order to finance this, the same price applies for the green product with the 72-hour delivery time as for OSL’s standard “Speed Cargo” product with a 24-48 hour delivery time. At the end of the year, the partners decide whether with their contributions to support a regional environmental project or whether to donate the money to the initiative selected by OSL; the responsible committees are currently still deciding on this matter.

From measurement to action

In 2014, Online Systemlogistik became the first general cargo cooperation to be certified by DEKRA according to the EN 16258 standard. The standard is used for the uniform calculation of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for a standardised CO₂ balance. During the annual recertifications, the OSL quality management team checks whether the partners’ values are within the tolerance range. Deviations are analysed in detail and countermeasures taken if necessary. For the partner audits, OSL also consults the environmental assessments; since 2002, OSL has been continuously certified according to the environmental management system standard ISO 14001. “We take the processes defined in ISO 14001 for achieving environmental goals very seriously,” says OSL Quality and Environmental Management Officer Marcella Rennecke. “With the new Green Cargo product, we are now creating an easily measurable metric in terms of climate protection and CO₂ reduction.”

Opening ceremony at our Central Hub (ZUB): our new office and staff facility is just the way we wanted it to be for our employees – 800 square metres of space where they can feel at home. It provides pleasant dressing rooms, modern sanitary facilities including showers for men and women, a lounge with snack and beverage machines, a conference room, and offices for the administrative staff. With its attractive and sustainable wooden construction, the building is quite something to look at. It was completed in the fall of 2022 and has been in use since then. Now that it’s summer it’s time to celebrate: we were holding an opening ceremony on Friday with our system partners, colleagues, and everyone involved in building it. And, of course, the food truck was there again – for the celebration in the afternoon and for our drivers and employees at the central hub from 6 p.m. on.

For the past 20 years, Oxana Ganswind has been the first point of contact at ONLINE Systemlogistik for all questions concerning financial clearing, and the system partners rely on her for advice and support. When she started with us, many things were still done the old way: She managed “mountains” of settlement paperwork and clearing correction sheets, and the fax machine never stood still. The “paper mountains” and faxes are now history, but not the enormous commitment of Oxana Ganswind. For that, we thank her very much and congratulate her on her anniversary!

They made it at the first go! Of our 96 partners, seven participated in the DEKRA matrix certification for the first time this year – and all seven were immediately certified according to the standards DIN EN ISO 9001 (quality management), DIN EN ISO 14001 (environmental management – only for national partners) and HACCP (hygiene management)!

Big “family reunion” of the QMB at ONLINE Systemlogistik: Once a year, the quality and environmental management representatives of our system partners meet for a training in the middle of Germany in Künzell. Thereby, we also take a look at the so-called internal quality audits of the previous year.

Each partner is audited internally once a year. The criteria include punctuality, delivery rate and scan rate. In addition, the requirements of the standards (DIN EN ISO 9001 | DIN EN ISO 14001 | HACCP) are also checked by independent auditors. In 2022, the majority of partners again achieved an overall result of over 95 percent. Congratulations on this great result!

Just as important as the training day, however, is the evening before. At the big get-together there was a great buzz of voices; the relief of being able to greet and talk to each other again without restrictions was huge.

Long may she live! Our Quality and Environmental Management Representative Marcella Rennecke is celebrating her 15th anniversary with the company this year. “High” is the word we associate with her: She fulfills her task of keeping the quality standard in our general cargo network at a high level with all partners competently and persistently. The audits she schedules make the partners’ hearts beat faster – often with excitement as to whether all the high requirements are being met, but even more often with joy: Marcella Rennecke is our kind-hearted soul who patiently and pragmatically deals with every aspect of the partners’ quality and environmental management and supports them in finding and implementing good solutions.  She is the one who, with a lot of energy and commitment, creates the conditions for new system partners to meet our standards.

We were looking forward to them, and we had the food truck there: employees of our system partner agotrans Logistik visited our central hub (“ZUB”) in Schlitz near Fulda. The forwarding merchants, IT, controlling and warehouse specialists were particularly impressed by the complex processes involved in general cargo handling in the two halls and by how precisely everything is timed. When the agotrans employees met their drivers in the “ZUB”, there was a big hello.

Bright, friendly, sustainable and inviting – we are very happy about our new office and social building at the central HUB in Schlitz near Fulda! There are spacious break and changing rooms as well as modern sanitary facilities for drivers, HUB employees, and there are also offices, a training room, a doctor’s room, and 120 car parking spaces in front of the building.

We have invested a total of 2.5 million euros in the 800-square-meter, energy-saving building in timber construction, including the land. The higher investment costs for our sustainable “Efficiency House 55” are offset by the lower maintenance costs: Compared with the minimum requirements of the Building Energy Act (GEG), it requires only 55 percent of primary energy, such as coal or mineral oil. At the same time, thermal insulation is 30 percent better.

To reduce the CO₂ footprint, a photovoltaic system was installed on the roof. It will not only supply electricity for the fully air-conditioned building at all times of the year, but also power the central HUB. Charging points for e-cars are available in the employee parking lot. As the site for the new building, the OSL real estate company had acquired the corner lot adjacent to the central HUB, which is about 10,000 square meters in size.

We welcome our new partner, Werner Transport & Logistik KG! The company, based in Schleswig-Holstein, was already working for us as a service provider. In our general cargo network, Werner Transport will continue to be responsible for the area north of Rendsburg.

At the beginning of 2023, our Belgian service provider Jet Transport will then also be included as a system partner with all rights and obligations; Jet is on the road for us in Belgium.

We have thus almost achieved our goal of having only system partners in the network who also feed in and do not just provide support in distribution and procurement.
